Glossary

  • 802.1Q
    See VLAN
  • Agent Normal Mode
Used when referring to the WiSentry Agent.  Agents installed in Normal Mode operate on non-VLAN segments.
  • Agent VLAN Mode
Used when referring to the WiSentry Agent.  Agents installed in VLAN Mode operate on VLAN segments.
  • Authorize
To mark a discovered device as an authorized device in WiSentry.  Alerts will not be sent for authorized devices.
  • DeAuthorize
To mark a discovered device as a deauthorized device in WiSentry.  Alerts (if configured) will be sent for any deauthorized device.
  • Discovery
Devices displayed in the WiSentry Administrator are deemed "discovered"
  • Dynamic DiscoveryTM
    See WiSentry Dynamic Discovery
  • Exclude
Exclude a range of devices to be discovered by WiSentry Agents.  See Exclude a MAC Range for more information.
  • Heuristics
    See WiSentry Heuristics
  • Include
Include a range of devices to be discovered by WiSentry Agents.  See Include a MAC Range for more information.
  • License
The WiSentry Control requires a license to operate longer than 30 days.
  • MAC Address
Short for Media Access Control address, a hardware address that uniquely identifies each node of a network. In IEEE 802 networks, the Data Link Control (DLC) layer of the OSI Reference Model is divided into two sublayers: the Logical Link Control (LLC) layer and the Media Access Control (MAC) layer. The MAC layer interfaces directly with the network medium. Consequently, each different type of network medium requires a different MAC layer.
  • Model/Name
The reported model of the device.  See Managing Discovery for more information.
  • Normal Mode
    See Agent Normal Mode
  • OUI
Short for Organizational Unique Identifier, the first 24 bits of a MAC address for a network-connected device, which indicate the specific vendor for that device. The IEEE assigns OUIs to vendors. (The last 24 bits of the MAC address are the device’s unique serial number, assigned to the device by the manufacturer.)  The OUI sometimes is referred to as the Vendor ID.
  • Probability
The WiSentry Administrator reports a probability for discovered devices.  See Managing Discovery for more information.
  • Probes
    See WiSentry Heuristics
  • Remote Agent
    See WiSentry Agent
  • Trunk
    One or more VLANs
  • VLAN
Short for virtual LAN, a network of computers that behave as if they are connected to the same wire even though they may actually be physically located on different segments of a LAN. VLANs are configured through software rather than hardware, which makes them extremely flexible. One of the biggest advantages of VLANs is that when a computer is physically moved to another location, it can stay on the same VLAN without any hardware reconfiguration.
  • VLAN Mode
    See Agent VLAN Mode
  • WiSentry AdministratorTM
The interface program used by WiSentry.  Typically installed on the WiSentry Control Server machine, the interface can be run remotely on any number of machines.
  • WiSentry AgentTM
The service used by the WiSentry passively and actively probe devices on the network.  WiSentry requires at least one agent be installed and can report from a number of agents in a single installation.
  • WiSentry Control ServerTM
The controlling application and database for WiSentry.  WiSentry requires at least one Control Server per network.
  • WiSentry Dynamic DiscoveryTM
Introduced in version 3.0, Dynamic Discovery is a non-OUI detection method for WiSentry Agents.
  • WiSentry HeuristicsTM
aka Heuristics, Probes or WiSentry Probes - this is the logic that WiSentry uses to determine the type of device that is connected to your network.
  • WiSentry ProbesTM
    See WiSentry Heuristics
